I wanted to try the ÖBB NightJet train with my bike for a long time, and this summer, during my cycle trip in the Austrian Alps, I finally had the chance. Is the famous Austrian night train really good for cyclists? Will you get a good night’s sleep in the little pod? Or is flying actually easier and cheaper? Keep reading to find out whether the ÖBB NightJet works for cyclists.

After too much flying in the past four years, I decided to go for a bike trip somewhere I could reach without a plane. I didn’t have many days off, so it had to be fairly close by. I looked at the map, googled the train connections, and decided to start in Munich, cycle to Austria, and take the Innsbruck-Amsterdam night train (getting off in Essen).

When booking the tickets, I had some doubts. Won’t the trip just be super long and exhausting? What if the sleeping pod turns out too small and uncomfortable to even sleep a wink? What if we’re just overpaying and it would’ve been faster and cheaper to take a plane?

But I was also excited. The last time I took a night train was when I was four, in Poland, in the early 90s, when it took a whole night to cross the country and get from the coast to the mountains. I suddenly remembered the big bunk bed, being carried to sleep by the rhythmical clickety-clack and the smooth swaying of the train car. Once the tickets were paid, it was this childlike joy and anticipation that dominated my mood.

What is the ÖBB NightJet?

After air travel had become more accessible and affordable, European night trains began to gradually disappear. Why would someone want to spend a whole night travelling to a destination that could be reached by plane within 2 or 3 hours? Railway operators found the night trains expensive to operate, and the high-speed trains were so fast that on many routes it simply didn’t make sense to offer a night connection.

But the tide has turned in 2016. Travellers became more environmentally conscious, and the demand for alternatives to flying was rising. So the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) stepped in and launched their NightJet network.

The idea is simple: the passengers board the train in the evening, spend the night on a train (either in a private sleeping car, couchette, or in a regular seat car), and arrive at their destination in the morning. Instead of wasting the time during the day on travelling and the money on a hotel room, you can move across Europe in your sleep.

Which ÖBB NightJet trains allow bicycles on board?

Currently (October 2026), these NightJet trains have bicycle spaces:

6 bicycle spaces:

NJ 40233 / 40294 Vienna – Rome

NJ 294 / 295 Munich – Rome

NJ 446 / 447 Vienna – Bregenz

NJ 490 / 491 Vienna – Hamburg

NJ 40420 / 40491 Innsbruck – Hamburg

NJ 40490 / 40421 Vienna – Amsterdam

NJ 420 / 421 Innsbruck – Amsterdam

NJ 470 / 471 Zurich – Hamburg

NJ 466 / 467 Vienna – Zurich

NJ 402 / 403 Zurich – Amsterdam

3 bicycle spaces:

NJ 464 / 465 or NJ 1464 / 1465 Graz – Zurich

NJ 468 / 469 Vienna – Brussels

You can find an updated list of NightJet trains with bicycle spaces on the na oficjalnej stronie internetowej parku.

Booking a bicycle space on the ÖBB NightJet

Don’t wait too long to book your ticket!

With bicycle travel and bikepacking becoming increasingly popular, the demand for bicycle places on trains is sharply rising. Since most ÖBB NightJet trains only have 6 bike spots, you need to reserve your spot early, especially during the high season and on weekends.

For our trip on August 25th (Tuesday), we managed to buy the tickets less than three weeks in advance, on August 7th. If we wanted to travel on a weekend, we probably would’ve bought the tickets a few weeks earlier.

The price for the bicycle spot is always the same – € 9,90. But for your own ticket, you can save quite a lot if you book it early.

Buying the bicycle ticket offline is super easy – you simply need to click “change” in the field “passengers, discounts & bicycles” and add the bicycle.

Rules for the bicycles on the ÖBB NightJet

Theoretically, there are some restrictions regarding what bikes are allowed on the NightJet trains. Here are the maximum dimensions:

Length: max. 185 cm

Height: max. 110 cm

Width: max. 60 cm

Wheel diameter: 28 inches

Tire width: 4.2 cm

Weight: max. 30 kg

In reality, the dimensions are not strictly controlled. I had no issue bringing along my bike with 29-inch tires and a handlebar slightly wider than 60 cm. But if you’re travelling with an unconventional bike exceeding these dimensions significantly, the staff might refuse to board you.

E-bikes are allowed (as long as they are within the allowed dimensions), but it’s forbidden to charge the battery on the train.

The bicycle carriage on the ÖBB NightJet

Unless you choose the place in the seating carriage, your bike will travel in a different carriage than you. The information on the platform is super helpful in figuring out where on the platform you stand to board the train with your bike as efficiently as possible.

The new generation of the NightJet trains doesn’t have the traditional bike hangers, which in my opinion is good news. Instead, there are clamps to secure your bike against the wall. There is also a loop to lock your bike to (remember, you’ll sleep in a different carriage, so you want your bike to be safe for the night).

The bikes are grouped in three sets of two, and the spaces are supposed to be allocated based on when people are getting on and off the train (e.g. if you’re travelling from Amsterdam to Innsbruck, your bike will be assigned the spot in the very back of the car, so that people getting off the train earlier, for example in Munich, are closer to the door).

If you’re travelling with someone, it’s not guaranteed that your bikes will be assigned spaces next to each other. This happened to my partner and me. I didn’t want to risk that someone locks their bike blocking mine, so I asked the train conductor if we could swap the spots. At first he objected, explaining that the bikes are allocated based on the destination of each traveller, but then he agreed that we put our bikes together. I left a note for the other travellers to explain the situation.

You’re also asked to print out your bicycle ticket and attach it to your bike, so that the staff knows whose bike it is.

The train itself is low-floor, so boarding is unproblematic. However, there are three steps leading to the bicycle spots. It’s definitely a nuisance, especially with a fully loaded bike. I wish someone designing the bike carriage had more imagination.

Couchettes and mini cabins

There are three comfort categories to choose from for your trip with the NightJet: the seat car, the couchettes / mini cabins (the mini cabins are only available in the new generation trains), and the private sleeping car. We chose the mini cabins, as a compromise between price and comfort. We paid € 115 per person (choosing the cheapest, non-exchangeable option), but if you book your trip earlier, you can even get a ticket for as little as € 50.

The choice between a shared couchette compartment (for 4 to 6 people, ladies-only compartments available) or a mini cabin was simple – the price was the same, so it was obvious that we’d rather avoid listening to strangers snoring.

The mini cabins look a little like the Japanese capsule hotels. Very modern but not particularly spacious. 190 x 63.5 x 90 cm – just big enough for anyone who isn’t exceptionally tall.

Every cabin comes with two lockers: one for your hand luggage (big enough to fit a larger pannier or two smaller ones, but not big enough for all your luggage, unless you’re a minimalist), and one for your shoes. Both are securely locked with an NFC card that is also used to lock your cabin.

The limited space in the mini cabin is arranged quite smartly: there are some coat hooks, a shelf, and a sliding table for breakfast (which is included in the ticket price). I’d definitely choose the NightJet again for my next trip to the Alps.

If you’re less budget-conscious and value comfort, go for the private sleeping car (for one, two, or three people). You’ll get your own shower and toilet, more space for your luggage, and a more comfortable bed + a better breakfast (the one we got in the mini cabin was super basic: a bun with jam and a coffee).

Travel time and punctuality

The NightJet trains are not the demons of speed. The trip from Amsterdam to Zurich, for example, takes 12 hours; Cologne to Salzburg takes over 9 hours, Berlin to Vienna almost 11 hours, and our trip from Innsbruck to Essen was scheduled to take over 10 hours.

But since you’re going to sleep through most of the trip, it doesn’t matter so much. There is even something soothing and relaxing in slowly rolling through Europe, lying in your little cabin.

For the first part of our trip, the train was on schedule. But once we crossed into Germany and passed Augsburg, things started to go south. First, a few minutes’ delay, then an hour, then an announcement that it’s impossible to tell how much bigger the delay will be. The train staff said that it’s been a regular issue recently, due to the capacity issues on the German railways.

In the end, we arrived in Essen around 90 minutes later than planned. According to the statistics, night trains are some of the most delayed trains in Europe, and the Amsterdam-Innsbruck route (NightJet 420) is currently leading in the ranking of least punctual overnight trains. When planning your trip, assume that you’d be arriving about one hour later than scheduled, to have some buffer.

ÖBB NightJet train with a bicycle – my honest opinion

Would I travel on the NightJet train with my bike again? Definitely yes! In my opinion, taking a train is so much easier than flying with your bike – you don’t need to disassemble and pack your bike, you skip the annoying trip to the airport, and it’s much more eco-friendly.

I also find it less stressful and more like a real old-school journey.

The biggest downside? In the peak summer season, the NightJet trains are quite popular, and there’s simply not enough bike spaces. We had to adjust our travel plans, since there were no more bike spaces on the weekend train – that was quite annoying. And of course, the punctuality – if your trip is already taking over 10 hours, every additional hour on the train becomes frustrating, especially knowing that you still have to take another local train to get back home.

Regardless of that, if you’re looking for a way to get with your bike to the Alps from Belgia, the Holandia, or northern Germany, the NightJet train is an option you should consider. Even if just for the experience and the childish joy of taking a sleeper train!

Cycling to the station, boarding the train with your bike, falling asleep, and waking up at the foot of the Alps – doesn’t it sound tempting?
