Crossing by bicycle was easy and uncomplicated &#8211; the border guards quickly checked my passport, asked for the purpose of my stay and wished me safe travels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There are plenty of other border crossings between Croatia and Bosnia, and a few between Bosnia and Serbia and Bosnia and Montenegro. You should be able to cross them all by bicycle. If you have any experience entering Bosnia through other border crossings on your bicycle, please share it in the comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travelling to Bosnia and Herzegovina by train<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Currently, there are no international trains to Bosnia and Herzegovina. There used to be a direct Intercity train from Zagreb to Sarajevo, but since 2016, it has been suspended.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travelling to Bosnia and Herzegovina by plane<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Sarajevo is the biggest international airport, with direct flights from London, Stockholm, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Istanbul, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Vienna, Belgrade, and Zagreb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/tp.media\/content?currency=eur&#038;trs=325415&#038;shmarker=550739&#038;locale=en&#038;default_destination=SJJ&#038;show_hotels=true&#038;powered_by=true&#038;border_radius=0&#038;plain=true&#038;color_button=%2300A991&#038;color_button_text=%23ffffff&#038;promo_id=3414&#038;campaign_id=111\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You can also find affordable connections with WizzAir to Tuzla (from Eindhoven, Billund, Vienna, Basel, Malmo, Stockholm and multiple German cities) or Banja Luka (RyanAir and WizzAir flights from a handful of European cities).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Getting a cardboard box for your bicycle in Sarajevo shouldn&#8217;t be too difficult. I took a flight from Sarajevo with my bike three times, and in all cases, I found a box within 2 to 3 hours. Your best bet is to visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-bikeshop.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOorSjdXkW9EcLWD2DrWjxhHM5pM6D4rr-iraDiMGpr5Qw8U8F2WH\">m-Bike Shop<\/a>. However, you cannot take a bicycle with you. You can, however, try to contact the carrier in advance and ask if it is possible to transport your bike in the luggage compartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Another option is to travel to Zagreb, Croatia. You can take your bicycle on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flixbus.com\/?_sp=416b0ff5-aea2-41e3-9725-bf516e21a661.1679493017556&amp;atb_pdid=1e356b15-d8df-421d-aedf-d79f36693419&amp;_ga=2.33989153.1202007746.1679488855-1626291280.1679488855\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;Flixbus buses to Zagreb from Budapest, Vienna, and Prague<\/a>. The prices are very affordable, and you will avoid the hassle of disassembling your bike because it will comfortably travel on a luggage rack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"aligncenter wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/pl\/2021\/12\/18\/traveling-by-flixbus-with-a-bicycle\/\">Read more about taking your bicycle on Flixbus buses.&nbsp;<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wypo\u017cyczenie roweru w Norwegii<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Only a few companies in Bosnia &amp; Herzegovina offer to rent bicycles equipped with luggage racks suitable for multiple-day touring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You can rent a bike from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ihouse-mostar.com\/bike-rental-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iHouse Bike Rental in Mostar<\/a>. They have good-quality mountain bikes with hydraulic brakes and 29-inch wheels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">For 20 euros\/day, they include a helmet, tyre repair kit, essential tools, an air pump, lights, a water bottle, a luggage rack, a safety locker and two panniers (20 l each). For an additional fee, you can request drop-off in another town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">They also have E-bikes (for 40 euros\/day).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.herzegovinabike.ba\/en\/rent-a-bike-mostar\/\">Herzegovina Bike<\/a> in Mostar is another company that rents bicycles. For 15 euros\/ day, they include a helmet, pump, bike lock, and tyre repair kit. You&#8217;ll have to pay extra for a luggage rack and panniers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ukszta\u0142towanie terenu<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Like all Balkans, Bosnia &amp; Herzegovina is a very mountainous country. However, you might feel uncomfortable on busier roads, as cars don\u2019t always maintain the proper distance when overtaking cyclists, and there is rarely enough roadside space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Luckily, there are plenty of smaller and quieter roads on which you can see only a few cars per hour.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"is-resized wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_20180910_171144-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_20180910_171144-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_20180910_171144-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_20180910_171144-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_20180910_171144.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Peaceful, lonely roads in the middle of the Bosnian mountains<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Regarding cities, bike lanes only exist in certain parts of Sarajevo, and entering and exiting the city might be a tad challenging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In the mountains, you will likely cycle through some tunnels that are not well-lit. You should have decent bicycle lights and a reflective vest to ensure you\u2019re visible to drivers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bike shops in Sarajevo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If something is wrong with your bicycle or you need a cardboard box for your bike for the flight, Sarajevo is the best place to find help. There are a few pretty good bike shops in the city. I used their services a few times: to replace the tyres, fix a broken spoke, replace a luggage rack, and replace brake pads. There are, however, some connections between the major cities, for example, Banja Luka &#8211; Sarajevo and \u010capljina &#8211; Mostar &#8211; Sarajevo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">W Bo\u015bni funkcjonuje dw\u00f3ch przewo\u017anik\u00f3w:&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/zrs-rs.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Koleje Republiki Serbskiej<\/a>&nbsp;i&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/zrs-rs.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Koleje Federacji Bo\u015bni i Hercegowiny<\/a>. Neither of them has specified rules or cars designed for the transportation of bicycles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It doesn\u2019t mean taking a bicycle on a train is impossible in Bosnia and Herzegovina. But it depends on your luck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I took my bicycle on a train from \u010capljina to Sarajevo in 2018 when I couldn&#8217;t continue cycling due to a knee injury.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The process was quite complicated. First, I asked at the ticket counter if I could buy a ticket for myself and my bike. The lady told me they didn\u2019t have bicycle tickets, and she was unsure if I could travel with my bike. I was told to talk to the conductor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I went to the platform, where the conductor looked at my bike with a mix of doubt and irritation, then made a few calls and finally told me the good news. He helped me put my bike on the train, and once we arrived in Sarajevo, he helped me unload it too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If the train is full, you will most likely be denied boarding with your bike. The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iswatersafetodrink.in\/bosnia-and-herzegovina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;WHO also confirms<\/a>&nbsp;that tap water is safe to drink in 99% of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There are sometimes long stretches through the mountains between villages. It can happen that you won&#8217;t see any shop for 30-40 kilometres. In the mountains, you will find plenty of scenic, secluded spots. You have to remain cautious, though. Even though it\u2019s been 27 years since the Bosnian war, some areas are still contaminated with landmines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Before looking for a camp spot for the night, use the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.minesuspectedareas&amp;hl=en&amp;gl=US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BH Mine Suspected Areas App<\/a>&nbsp;(available for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.minesuspectedareas&amp;hl=en&amp;gl=US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Android&nbsp;<\/a>i&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/ba\/app\/mine-suspected-areas\/id1546066712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iOS<\/a>) to check if the place is safe. Even if it\u2019s not marked in the app, avoid places that look like people don\u2019t walk there. It has a fixed exchange rate to the euro: 1 KM = 0.51 euro.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Big supermarkets, hotels, and the city&#8217;s main tourist attractions accept card payments. However, you will need cash for small hostels, guesthouses, and campsites, lesser-known tourist attractions, restaurants, and shopping in small villages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I usually use a Revolut card when travelling to get a good conversion rate and avoid the hassle of looking for exchange offices. With the Revolut card, you can withdraw cash from some UniCredit bank ATMs with no extra fees, while other banks might charge you an additional fee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Internet i karty SIM<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Get a local SIM card to avoid an atrociously high phone bill for international roaming after your cycling holidays in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I always have one to research my route, find accommodation and stay in touch with people at home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In 2019, I used the BH Telecom SIM card. They have a variety of data packages for an affordable price. For example, 25 GB of data (with no expiration date) costs about 26 KM. They have many&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhtelecom.ba\/en\/shops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sales points<\/a>&nbsp;in all the bigger cities in B&amp;H. You can also find SIM cards in some convenience stores and kiosks. Remember to download your maps so you can access them offline when the signal is weak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best cycling routes in Bosnia and Herzegovina<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ciro-trail.com\/en\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ciro Trail<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The most popular cycling route in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the Ciro Trail, a 157-km trail built on the old narrow-gauge railway from Mostar to Dubrovnik. It lets you see the country&#8217;s most beautiful sights, such as the Mostar Bridge and the Zavala Monastery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Most of the Ciro Trail follows small country roads with little traffic. Some stretches go through remote areas with no villages and settlements, so you should always carry enough water and food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Along Naretva River from Sarajevo to Omis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This is one of the most beautiful routes I\u2019ve ever taken.
