In 2020, during my first trip to the country of tulips, I was struck by how easy it was to navigate the perfectly-designed bicycle paths.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And cycling in the Netherlands is far from boring (even for such a mountain-geek as myself)! From the sandy beaches of Zeeland, through the vibrant cities of Rotterdam, Zwolle, Amsterdam and Groningen to the quiet countryside in Frisia, cycling through the Netherlands was a perfect way to spend my holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200816_095725-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"cycling in the netherlands\" class=\"wp-image-15199\" style=\"width:384px;height:512px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200816_095725-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200816_095725-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200816_095725-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200816_095725-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200816_095725.jpeg 1875w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travelling to the Netherlands with your bicycle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Planes directly to Amsterdam from the US and outside of Europe. From Europe, cheaper flights to Eindhoven, You can also travel by Flixbus and train &#8211; for example from London, Paris, Brussels, and Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plane<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If you\u2019re travelling to the Netherlands from outside of Europe, there is a good chance you\u2019ll be flying with KLM. You can take your bike with you but their prices for intercontinental flights are pretty high, so it might be worth renting a bike in the Netherlands instead. You can&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airline-baggage-fees.com\/sports\/bikes\/klm.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">read more about KLM&#8217;s bike policy on its official website.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It&#8217;s possible to buy a KLM bicycle box at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport for 20 euros.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/2022\/02\/25\/taking-a-bicycle-on-a-plane-all-you-need-to-know\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Not sure how to pack your bicycle for the flight? Read my guide here.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Train<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">London &#8211; Amsterdam<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You cannot currently&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eurostar.com\/rw-en\/travel-info\/travel-planning\/luggage\/bikes\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bring your bike on the Eurostar train from London to Amsterdam<\/a>&nbsp;(it\u2019s only possible to take a boxed bike between London and Paris). The exception is if you have a folding bike. The length of a folded bike has to be shorter than 85 cm, and it has to be in a protective bag.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Berlin &#8211; Amsterdam<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I paid 73,90 euros for a train from the Hague to Berlin, and I only booked two days in advance (it was low season). It\u2019s not possible to make a booking with your bicycle online. You have to&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nsinternational.com\/en\/contact-with-nsinternational\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">call NS International for your reservation.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brussels &#8211; Amsterdam<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There are direct trains from Brussels to Amsterdam, and the ticket prices start from 25 euros. You\u2019ll have to pay another 12 euros for the bicycle ticket and 4 euros for the reservation for IC Brussels if you travel in July or August. You can buy<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nsinternational.com\/en\/traintickets-v3\/#\/bike-search\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;a bicycle ticket from Brussels to Amsterdam here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paris &#8211; Amsterdam&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You can take your bicycle on the Thalys train from Paris to Amsterdam, but it has to be disassembled and stored in a non-rigid cover no larger than 135x85x30 cm. Only selected buses are equipped with bicycle racks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Flixbus connection from Berlin to Amsterdam is quite convenient &#8211; you board at 23:00 and wake up at 8:15 in Amsterdam! If you book in advance, you can travel with your bike for as little as 25 euros.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Flixbus from Brussels to Amsterdam costs less than 20 euros (bicycle ticket included), and the journey takes about three hours &#8211; almost the same time as the train.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"aligncenter wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/2021\/12\/18\/traveling-by-flixbus-with-a-bicycle\/\">Read more about travelling by Flixbus with a bicycle.&nbsp;<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bike rental in the Netherlands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Bringing a bicycle to the Netherlands might feel like carrying coals to Newcastle. If you\u2019re not very attached to your own two-wheeler, you can easily rent a bike in the Netherlands. Here are some of the best options I found:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">At&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/black-bikes.com\/rent-a-bike\/hand-brake-bikes\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Black Bikes Bike Rental<\/a>&nbsp;you can rent a bike in one of 19 Dutch cities and return it to another location. The prices start from 16,49 euros for the first day, and the longer you rent the bike, the less you pay. (You will need to add the payment for theft and damage insurance to the price).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"612\" height=\"816\" loading=\"lazy\" data-id=\"15200\" src=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200815_161006.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200815_161006.jpg 612w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200815_161006-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"612\" height=\"816\" loading=\"lazy\" data-id=\"15201\" src=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200815_163744.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200815_163744.jpg 612w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200815_163744-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">At&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macbike.nl\/en\/touring-bicycle\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MacBike<\/a>&nbsp;you can rent a typical Dutch city bike or a proper touring bike with 21 gears, including two panniers (if you don\u2019t have your own) and a repair kit. It costs 25 euros daily (if you rent for longer than four days, you will get a discount). If you come to the Netherlands with big luggage you don\u2019t want to carry around on the bike, they will store it for you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If you\u2019re on a budget and don\u2019t carry much stuff, you can save a lot of money renting a bike with&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/swapfiets.nl\/en-NL\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Swapfiets<\/a>, especially if you\u2019re planning to stay in the Netherlands for a bit longer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Swapfiets is a Dutch bicycle subscription, something like car leasing. A monthly subscription for the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/swapfiets.nl\/en-NL\/breda\/deluxe-7\/configure\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deluxe 7 model&nbsp;<\/a>(a Dutch-style bike with 7 gears) costs 21,90 euros. You\u2019ll also have to add 29,90 euros for the flexible membership, so you can cancel anytime. It means a rental bike for just a little more than 50 euros a month! Unfortunately, the Swapfiets bikes are only equipped with a small front rack for a basket and don\u2019t have a rear luggage rack for panniers, so you can\u2019t travel with a lot of luggage. But if you pack light, you will be perfectly fine with a Swapfiets bike!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Terrain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Netherlands are as flat as it gets, making this country a<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/2023\/01\/27\/5-easy-cycling-routes-in-europe-cycling-holidays-for-beginners\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;perfect destination for first-time bicycle tourers<\/a>. If you\u2019re not in terrific shape and hate the climbs, you will love the Dutch roads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"612\" height=\"816\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200805_121917.jpg\" alt=\"bicycle touring in the netherlands\" class=\"wp-image-15192\" style=\"width:306px;height:408px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200805_121917.jpg 612w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200805_121917-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bike lanes, traffic rules and safety on the roads<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Netherlands are famous for the best and safest cycling infrastructure in the world. Unlike everywhere else in the world, road design prioritises cyclists. In most places, the cycling lanes are wide, separated from the car traffic and well-marked.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"867\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200808_122810-1024x867.jpeg\" alt=\"cycling in the Netherlands - sometimes you need to wait on a bridge to cross the canal\" class=\"wp-image-15202\" style=\"width:768px;height:650px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200808_122810-1024x867.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200808_122810-300x254.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200808_122810-768x650.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200808_122810-1536x1300.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200808_122810-2048x1733.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There are, however, a few spots in Amsterdam that might feel hectic for you, especially if you\u2019re not a seasoned cyclist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"The Most Dangerous Places to Cycle in Amsterdam\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hGnt5YhEu4E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Traffic rules for cyclists in the Netherlands<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Don\u2019t text and ride! You can get a 95 euro fine for using your phone during cycling! If you\u2019re&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/2022\/03\/29\/best-navigation-apps-for-bicycle-touring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">using your phone for navigation<\/a>, it needs to be placed on a bike mount (I recommend&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/quadlock.refr.cc\/joannachmara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Quad Lock<\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; a sturdy and durable phone mount).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-a89b3969 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/quadlock.refr.cc\/joannachmara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Click here to buy Quad Lock phone holder with 10 % discount<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Helmets are not compulsory and are rarely worn by the Dutch. The cycling infrastructure is very safe, so most people simply don\u2019t deem it necessary. But you do you!&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Make sure your lights and your bell work properly. You need to have a proper front and rear light.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Signal when taking a turn! Of course, you should be doing it anywhere you cycle, but since there are many cyclists in the Netherlands, it\u2019s even more important to do it there.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200807_130553-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15193\" style=\"width:576px;height:768px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200807_130553-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200807_130553-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200807_130553-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200807_130553-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_20200807_130553.jpeg 1875w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Knooppunt &#8211; cycling junction network<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The cycling routes in the Netherlands are connected in a nationwide network and, similarly to&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/2022\/02\/14\/cycling-in-belgium-practical-bike-touring-guide-2\/#Bike_path_network\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Belgium<\/a>, the junctions have signposts with numbers making it easy to navigate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This way, you can cycle without looking at your phone or navigation. You simply plan your route, note the numbers of&nbsp;<em>knooppunt&nbsp;<\/em>down on a piece of paper that you stick to your handlebar and follow them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Easy biking on the Dutch cycle junction network\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ScmsrtmG2uM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taking your bicycle on a train in the Netherlands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You can&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ns.nl\/en\/travel-information\/bikes-on-the-train.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">take your bicycle on the Dutch trains (NS)<\/a>&nbsp;if there is a designated space for bikes. Bikes are only allowed from 9 am to 4 pm from Monday to Friday, and all day on weekends and during July and August to avoid having too many bikes on board during the rush hours.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To take your bicycle on a Durch train, you must purchase a bicycle ticket (<em>Fietskaart Dal<\/em>). It costs 7,50 euros and can be bought&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ns.nl\/producten\/en\/onbeperkt-reizen\/p\/fietskaart-dal\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online<\/a>&nbsp;or in the NS ticket machine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Taking a folding bike on a train is free of charge as long as you fold your bike.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To get to the platform, you must scan your ticket to pass through the gates. When I was travelling with my fully loaded, chunky bike, I struggled to get through the narrow gate. You should take the panniers off or ask the staff for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Weather<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Dutch weather can be moody. No matter when you\u2019re visiting, bring a good raincoat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The best time for cycling in the Netherlands is from April to October. If you visit in April and May, you\u2019ll get a chance to cycle among the famous Dutch tulip fields. The country is densely populated, so it\u2019s hard to find a secluded spot to pitch your tent. There used to be a network of official semi-wild campsites, but most were closed because people left them dirty. There are still a few spots where you can legally camp for free you can find them<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wild-kamperen.nl\/category\/wildkampeerlocaties\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;on this website<\/a>&nbsp;(only in Dutch).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Many hospitable people in the Netherlands will let you pitch your tent in their garden. Plenty of people who cycled abroad and stayed with the locals are now willing to pay back as CouchSurfing or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warmshowers.org\">WarmShowers<\/a> hosts. You shouldn\u2019t have problems finding a local to host you (maybe except for Amsterdam &#8211; this city has so many tourists that all the hosts receive way too many requests, so make sure to secure a place to stay in advance).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paid accommodation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The hotel and hostel prices in the Netherlands are high. The cheapest dorm bed in Amsterdam or Rotterdam costs 25 euros. A simple double room costs about 80 euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There are plenty of campsites around the country, where you can stay for about 13-15 euros per person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You can also try staying with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vriendenopdefiets.nl\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Frienden Op de Fiets<\/a>&nbsp;(Friends of the Bike). It allows you to easily create a route and download a GPS file which you can later upload to the navigation app or device you\u2019re using. Alternatively, you can note down the&nbsp;<em>knooppunt&nbsp;<\/em>(the cycling junction numbers) and follow the signs along the route.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The route planner also shows many POIs, such as service stations, e-bike charging stations, campsites, bike-friendly B&amp;Bs, obstacles and ferries.
