Up north, you will find the best-kept Hellenic secret: the Pindus Mountains &#8211; an extraordinary cycling destination most people have <\/strong>never heard of. With empty roads, quaint Zagori villages and welcoming people, bike touring in the Pindus Mountains was one of the most incredible<strong> adventures I\u2019ve had in the last few years.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">No kidding, this is not just marketing enthusiastic BS. Once I entered the Pindus National Park, I instantly felt this place was different from anywhere I\u2019ve been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"aligncenter wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/pl\/2022\/07\/28\/cycling-in-the-pindus-mountains-greece\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">If you want to know more about my personal experiences from that trip, check out my&nbsp;Pindus travelogue.<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where are the Pindus Mountains?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Pindus Mountain range stretches from the Greek-Albanian border to the north of the Peloponnese. If you\u2019re travelling from abroad, it\u2019s easiest to land in Athens and take an Olympic Airlines flight to Ioannina. Taking&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olympicair.com\/en\/travel-information\/travelling-with-olympic-air\/baggage\/special-baggage\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a bicycle on a plane with Olympic Airlines<\/a>&nbsp;costs 55 euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A much more straightforward way to get to Pindus is to fly to Thessaloniki. If you decide on this option, book your train tickets in advance. Meteora is a beloved destination, so especially if you\u2019re travelling in the high season (from May to September), a seat reservation is necessary!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The fare for bike transportation on Greek trains is 5 euros. Unfortunately, you cannot add the bicycle to your ticket reservation, so you\u2019ll have to purchase your bike ticket either at the train station or from the train conductor. Check out this post. <\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bike rental in the Pindus Mountains<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If you\u2019re not coming to Greece with your bike, you can rent one in Ioannina for about 16 euros daily.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/tp.media\/content?trs=325415&#038;shmarker=550739&#038;locale=en&#038;default_pick_up_location=Ioannina&#038;powered_by=true&#038;border_radius=0&#038;plain=true&#038;color_background=%23ffffff&#038;color_button=%234C7491&#038;promo_id=5472&#038;campaign_id=57\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shepherd dogs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Greek stray and shepherd dogs are some of the most ferocious I\u2019ve ever met. You can meet a lot of them in the Pindus Mountains. Be prepared that you might run into a pack of them, as they are very protective of their flock. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Different people have different recommendations on how to deal with them. Having some stones in your handlebar that you can throw in their direction (NOT into them!) should work. Some cyclists told me flushing water in their faces helped, too. You might want to carry pepper spray, too, as it might be helpful to protect yourself from another creature\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bears <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Most people don\u2019t associate Greece with bears, but this country has over 450 brown bears. The majority of the population lives in the Pindus Mountains. Despite the popular myths, they are not bloodthirsty and dangerous, but there are a few rules to follow when cycling and camping in bear territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/P7051055-1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"bears in greece\" class=\"wp-image-10855\" style=\"width:576px;height:768px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/P7051055-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/P7051055-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/P7051055-1-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/P7051055-1-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/P7051055-1-1568x2091.jpg 1568w, https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/P7051055-1.jpg 1875w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Forget about hammock camping &#8211; the bears might get curious about a weird creature sleeping in the open air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Never store your food inside your tent. Pack it in a tight bag (you can use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avantlink.com\/click.php?tt=app&amp;ti=1019&amp;mi=10008&amp;pw=331865&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.campsaver.com%2Fursack-major-2xl-bear-resistant-food-bag.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bear bag<\/a>\u00a0that keeps the smell in) and hang it on a tree. Change your clothes after cooking and store them in a bag as well. The rule of thumb is &#8211; everything that smells should be out of your tent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When cycling, especially alone and in the evening, try to make some noise (singing or talking) to announce your presence. This way, you will avoid surprising the bear and scaring him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is the Pindus safe for solo female travellers?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I cycled through the Pindus Mountains on my own, and I did not feel in danger or experience any uncomfortable situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">People in the Zagori region are kind and hospitable, and even when camping alone, I felt at ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Of course, you should take the usual precautions (I mention the most important rules for camping alone as a woman&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wobblyride.com\/pl\/2022\/02\/21\/camping-alone-as-a-woman-are-you-gonna-die\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in this article<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Terrain and safety on the roads<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">One of the best things about cycling in the Pindus Mountains is the endless mountain roads with barely any cars. There are a few villages spread around the mountains, but they don&#8217;t have supermarkets or shops. Some of them have small restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Get enough food in Ioannina, Konitsa, Metsovo or Karpenissi. I only had trouble (big trouble) keeping myself hydrated when riding road number 20 from Konitsa to Kastoria. The weather is significantly milder than elsewhere in Greece. It will take you to 1705 metres above sea level, mostly on asphalt. Occasionally, the pavement is quite destroyed but still perfectly bikeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You\u2019ll get amazing views of the Aoos Valley and the intoxicating aroma of pine trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lake Drakolimni<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If you\u2019re into hiking, you might want to leave your bike for a day in Papigo and head to the Drakolimni.
